Ondrej Pavelec Makes 50 Saves in Thrashers’ Win Over Ottawa

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Ondrej Pavelec made 50 saves as the Atlanta Thrashers downed the Ottawa Senators, 3-1, at Scotiabank Place.

Rich Peverley had a goal and an assist while Zach Bogosian and Maxim Afinogenov each lit the lamp for the Thrashers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

“It was a tough game but I felt good out there tonight, especially after that first shot I faced,” said Pavelec. “It was nice to help the team snap that four-game losing skid.”

Mike Fisher scored the lone goal while Pascal Leclaire made 18 saves for the Senators, who have dropped four of their last five games.

“We did some good things and worked hard tonight but we just didn’t get the breaks,” said Fisher. “We ran into a hot goalie tonight and there’s not much you can do about that.”

Atlanta got the only goal of the first period with 7:47 left in the frame. Marty Reasoner won a left circle faceoff and got it back to the left point for Bogosian, who snapped a wrister past a screened Leclaire.

At the 11:51 mark of the second, the Thrashers made it a 2-0 game as Nik Antropov threw a shot on net from the right boards that Peverley tipped in for his sixth goal of the year.

Pavelec, who made 26 saves through the first two frames, continued his stellar play in the third period as he made several big stops to keep Ottawa off the board.

However, minor penalties to Afinogenov and Pavel Kubina gave Ottawa a 5-on-3. Pavelec made a couple of big stops, but Fisher was eventually able to jam the puck in from the left side to make it a 2-1 game with 4:27 to play.

Afinogenov, though, made up for the penalty call as he caught up with the puck behind the Ottawa defense down the left wing, skated in front and slipped a backhand into the net with 1:31 to play.

Atlanta plays in Montreal on Tuesday...Ottawa has off until Thursday when it will host Tampa Bay...The Senators had defeated Atlanta, 4-2, on October 10 in Ottawa...Ottawa went 1-for-4 on the power play while Atlanta failed to score on either of its two chances...Antropov had two assists in the game.
