Black Players Begin to Voice Concerns, Opposition About Rush Limbaugh As An Owner

From the drop, I’ve been in the camp that Rush Limbaugh as an NFL owner was a horrible idea. I think even if you get past the liberal/conservative element clash, which obviously a lot of people in the comments of the last post couldn’t do, there’s still the issue of just how poorly the man handles race relations in very public settings.↵↵This is, as you’ll recall, the same man who once said “the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,” when talking about Donovan McNabb. (By the way, if you ever want some opposition to that argument, go check out how Jason Campbell has been covered over the last year.) He also recently commented that basketball was the favorite sport of gangs, a comment dripping with racial overtones given other comments the pundit has made in the past.↵

↵↵But in the end, my opinion won’t matter when it comes to a potential ownership decision. But the NFL players and their willingness to play for Limbaugh? Yeah, that could matter.↵

↵↵⇥“All I know is from the last comment I heard, he said in (President) Obama’s America, white kids are getting beat up on the bus while black kids are chanting ‘right on,’” [Giants LB Mathias] Kiwanuka told The Daily News. “I mean, I don’t want anything to do with a team that he has any part of. He can do whatever he wants, it is a free country. But if it goes through, I can tell you where I am not going to play.”↵⇥↵⇥[...]↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥[Jets LB Bart] Scott says players remember what Limbaugh said, and adds that the NFL would be wise not to allow the nationally syndicated host into the league. “It’s an oxymoron that he criticized Donovan McNabb,” Scott said. “A lot of us took it as more of a racial-type thing. I can only imagine how his players would feel. I know I wouldn’t want to play for him. He’s a jerk. He’s an ---. What he said (about McNabb) was inappropriate and insensitive, totally off-base. He could offer me whatever he wanted, I wouldn’t play for him. ... I wouldn’t play for Rush Limbaugh. My principles are greater and I can’t be bought.” ↵⇥

↵↵

↵Go ahead and say they're being overly sensitive, but they're talking about the man who once dropped this gem:↵

↵↵⇥“Look, let me put it to you this way,” Limbaugh once said on his radio show, “the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”↵↵↵After reading everything Limbaugh has said and continues to say, you’ve got to wonder why a man who seems to so openly loathe black people would want to own a business that will largely have those same people as its employees.↵

↵↵Programming note: We won’t have any TSB on Saturday because of illness and unavailability. Hoping we’ll be back at it Sunday.↵
