Let’s Pile On The Packers

It hasn’t been a good time to be a Packers fan lately. Two weeks ago they were stomped on by the traitorous Brett Favre. Last week they gave up 38 points to the previously winless Buccaneers. The weather forecast says it’s going to rain this weekend. Bleah. Green Bay is starting to look like one of “those teams” in the NFL...which could provide a great opportunity for fantasy owners.

Right now, the Packers are unable to stop teams from catching the ball in their end zone. Statistically they look like one of the better defenses, but they have given up 16 passing touchdowns this season, including seven in the past two games. Compare that to the three rushing touchdowns they’ve allowed this year. That 16 to 3 difference of passing touchdowns allowed to rushing touchdowns allowed is the biggest gap in the NFL. There are worse passing defenses, but no defense has been as one-dimensional as the Packers.

That means anybody throwing or catching the ball against the Packers could be a great one-week waiver pickup. Green Bay plays the Cowboys next; that won’t help since Romo and Austin and Witten are probably already taken in your league. However, after that the Pack meets San Francisco and Detroit and QBs like Alex Smith and Matt Stafford might be available. Hey, if rookie Josh Freeman can throw for three touchdowns against Green Bay, those guys can.

Even if QBs aren’t available, there should be plenty of other options on your waiver wire including WR Jason Hill (SF), WR Michael Crabtree (SF) and TE Brandon Pettigrew (Det). They aren’t marquee players, but the Green Bay secondary has been making guys like Sammy Stroughter look good the past few weeks. If you have injury problems or you need to shake up your team, piling on the Pack could be a winning plan.
