Struggling Teams Finding It Hard To Win Games

Both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes have struggled this far in the season. Toronto is 3-10-5 this season and have not found the answer thus far with their goaltending. They brought in highly touted prospect Jonas Gustavsson this past offseason and Gustavsson is 3-4-3 with a 3.06 GAA. That is the best goals against average of the three goaltenders the Maple Leafs have played this season. Joey Macdonald has a 3.35 GAA in three games and Vesa Toskala 4.44 in six games. The Leafs brought in offensive talent Phil Kessel but he is not going to help a team that really just needs good goaltending at this moment. Saturday night was a prime exhibition for the Maple Leaf goaltending when Jonas Gustavsson was chased by the Calgary Flames after allowing two goals on the Flames first two shots on route to a 5-2 win in Toronto. Here is what Gustavsson had to say after the game:

↵↵“I’m mad when we lose the game, I want to play good and help the team,” said Gustavsson. “Sometimes, you have to move on and keep working hard and think about next practice.”

↵↵The Toronto Maple Leafs are not even the worst team in the NHL, that honor goes to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are 2-12-4 this season and have lost 14 straight games. They have had their fair share of injuries with starting goaltender Cam Ward being cut by a skate which will cause him to miss a month of the season and Erik Cole who missed ten games this season with a fractured leg. The Hurricanes are suffering from an offensive outage with only 36 goals in 18 games this season which is last in the league. The Hurricanes will try and break their losing streak Sunday against the Minnesota Wild.
