With Saturday’s loss at Pittsburgh, Notre Dame is now just 6-4 this season, and suddenly it’s not IF Charlie Weis will be fired, but when. In fact, if you believe Michael Wilbon, it’s already a done deal (but since when does Wilbon report on anything that’s not the NBA?). And as Dan Shaughnessy points out, Weis’ winning percentage (.583) is exactly the same as Tyrone Willingham’s when he was let go. If the media is already assuming it’s all but official, then that can only mean one thing -- it’s time to fire-up the New Notre Dame Coach Rumor Mill! First up, Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops.
Is Charlie Weis Done At Notre Dame?
↵↵If athletic director Jack Swarbrick decides Weis’ Notre Dame career is over after his fifth season, a source said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz will be in the mix to replace him. The source said Stoops has told confidants he would be interested in talking to the Irish.
↵↵A second candidate is someone who the Irish will get a good look at when they play him in two weeks.
↵↵Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh is one of the more intriguing names to pop up in the “sources tell me” mill that will be gurgitated and regurgitated to the Notre Dame fan base in the days to come.
It’s so intriguing, in fact, that Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby is trying to hastily cobble together a contract extension that is being sold as “soon to be announced.”
↵↵And don’t worry about that buyout that everyone loves to use as a reason Notre Dame would never fire Weis: “If athletic director Jack Swarbrick, university president Rev. John I. Jenkins ... want to make a change, they’re not going to be held hostage by a deal former athletic director Kevin White slapped together a half a season into the Weis Era.”
↵UPDATE: They can probably forget about Jim Harbaugh.
