Jose Aldo looked extremely impressive in stopping Mike Brown in the second round of their WEC 44 Featherweight Championship bout. While the first round was close it was clear that Brown was in trouble. Aldo was much quicker and able to land strikes with frequency. As soon as Brown was able to get Aldo against the cage and couldn’t complete a takedown it became a desperate situation for the champion.
Jose Aldo Stops Mike Brown In Second Round; Wins WEC Featherweight Championship
In the second round Brown pushed forward looking to try to force Jose to back up and slow down his game but instead ate a flurry of punches, knees and kicks. It appeared as though the champion thought that he may be able to pull the Brazilian to the ground and into a guillotine choke but instead slid off. Aldo didn’t hesitate and pounced on Brown, quickly moving to the mount. Knowing he was in trouble Brown gave up his back only to eat punch after punch to the side of his head forcing the referee to stop the fight.
The most poignant moment of the broadcast came when the question was asked that if Brown can’t take down Aldo, who in the division can? Mike Brown possesses massive strength and a good wrestling game and Aldo was able to stay calm against the cage and even scramble across the entire length of the cage to prevent the takedown. It was a stunning display that signals a lot of trouble for anyone who crosses Jose’s path in the future.
In the featured undercard bout Manny Gamburyan was able to outwork Leonard Garcia and win a unanimous decision. The first round was extremely close but in the second the workrate of Gamburyan became the deciding factor as he continually pushed Garcia to the cage and at the moments he was able to get the takedown he did nice work from the top.
But tonight belongs to the new WEC Featherweight Champion, Jose Aldo.
