Brandon Spikes Suspended For First Half of Next Game for Eye-Gouge

⇥⇥⇥⇥⇥⇥

For that, Brandon Spikes, you get this punishment meted out by Urban Meyer, via the Palm Beach Post’s Ben Volin:

⇥⇥Urban suspends Spikes for the first part of this weeks Vandy gameUm. That’s it? Could you define “first part” for me, Urbie?

⇥⇥Urban decided to suspend Spikes for a half after speaking with SEC office this morningThat’s better? I guess? It’s still pathetic.

Michigan’s Jonas Mouton earned a one-game suspension from the Big Ten for a rabbit punch earlier this season; Spikes’ actions are inarguably worse than that.

Spikes’ actions are also probably worse than this shot to a sensitive area delivered by Michigan’s Mark Ortmann this past Saturday (from The Wiz of Odds):

And it’s not as if suspending Spikes for the first half of a home game against Vanderbilt is really going to throw the Gators’ national title defense off the rails: The Gators beat Arkansas and Mississippi State this season mostly without a then-injured Spikes, and haven’t lost to Vandy since 1988.

This isn’t even defensible by the “We didn’t do anything they didn’t do” logic, either, from Tim Tebow or anyone. UPDATE: Even with this video as the reason for “retaliation”:

That, with the helmet coming off, doesn’t look quite as bad as the Spikes gouge. Clearly, the thing Spikes did that Georgia players didn’t do is get caught with his hand in a facemask at the end of a play. He should be punished for that.

What he got, unfortunately, is a slap on the wrist, and it’s going to make a lot of mainstream media voices mad this week.
