Hamstring Injury May Force Yankees To Replace Melky Cabrera

Yankees outfielder Melky Cabrera had to leave Sunday night's game in the 6th inning with a "slight strain of his left hamstring," but reports today are that it may be much worse.

According to Sam Borden, Cabrera might have “suffered a full hamstring tear” and as a result, the Yankees could be forced to replace him on the roster.

Just spoke to Brian Cashman, who said the Yankees doctors will be evaluating Melky Cabrera in the coming hours to determine the extent of Cabrera’s injury. It’s believed Cabrera could have suffered a full hamstring tear during Game 4, and according to MLB rules, the Yankees are allowed to petition for a roster change if they believe Cabrera won’t be able to play for the rest of the series. The player added would be "someone with the team here," Cashman said, though he wouldn’t speculate on names.

Brett Gardner took over for Cabrera Sunday night, and will probably start in Game 5 tonight. It is likely that Cabrera's spot on the roster would be filled by one of four players: Francisco Cervelli, Freddy Guzman, Ramiro Pena or Sergio Mitre (only Cervelli and Guzman have been on the postseason roster this season). When asked about it, Gardner said, "Don’t know anything."

Cabrera is 2-for-13 in the World Series, with one run scored.
