↵↵Our No. 1 combines preparation, football smarts and an almost eerie ability to make observations just as they come into play in the game. If you can’t learn something from him, you’re not paying attention.

What they call prescience, the common fan encounters more often as “DAMN YOU GARY DANIELSON STOP HEXING MY TEAM.” And he’s not bad, but the choice to rank him above Cris Collinsworth after the latter’s breakout season in the Sunday Night Football booth is a perplexing one. They can’t be waiting for Collinsworth to develop a larger body of work; they’ve already got him slotted in above partner Al Michaels.
↵Other hits and misses include: Ron Franklin (so criminally underrated it’s thrilling just to see him here), Verne Lundquist (America’s greatest living chortler), Chris Fowler (whom we’d rank in the top five for sheer pluck; here languishing at No. 23), and Joe Buck (that’s right, Joe Buck is on a list purported to contain the best of something).
