Virginia Tech 42, Virginia 13: Williams Scores Four Touchdowns For Second Straight Game
Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) – Ryan Williams had four touchdowns to help 14th-ranked Virginia Tech take a 42-13 win over Virginia in the Commonwealth Cup.
Williams had his second straight four-TD game and finished this contest with 182 yards on 23 carries for the Hokies (9-3, 6-2 ACC), who closed the regular season with four straight wins. Tyrod Taylor went 8-for-15 with 185 yards in the win.
Jameel Sewell had 17 carries for 104 yards and a score and added 121 yards on 12-of-22 passing for the Cavaliers (3-9, 2-6), who dropped their final six games of the season.
Holding a one-point lead in the third quarter, Virginia Tech was driving and got the ball to the Virginia 25, but Taylor was picked off in the end zone by Chris Cook.
However, on the second play Sewell fumbled the ball and Kam Chancellor took it 18 yards to the Virginia 10.
Two plays later, Williams punched it into the end zone from four yards out for a 21-13 lead with 5:51 left in the third.
After forcing the Cavaliers to punt, the Hokies extended their lead with an 11-play drive that spanned the third and fourth quarter with Williams’ fourth score of the day, a two-yard run up the middle, giving the team a 28-13 lead with 12:50 to play.
The Hokies again held the Cavaliers and were able to increase their lead on an odd play. At the Virginia Tech 39, Williams took a handoff down the right sideline and broke it for a big play. A Virginia player was able to punch the ball out of Williams’ hands, but it rolled into the end zone and Jarrett Boykin fell on it for a 35-13 lead with 10:21 to play.
David Wilson’s 10-yard touchdown run with under three minutes to play capped the scoring in the game.
The Cavaliers started the game with the ball and put together a 10-play drive that covered 73 yards and was capped on a 15-yard run around the left side by Sewell into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
The Hokies, though, answered on their ensuing touch as Williams pushed his way into the end zone on a five-yard score to tie the game with 4:58 left in the first.
Virginia put together another successful drive on its next possession as Robert Randolph’s 33-yard boot between the uprights gave his team a 10-7 lead with just 15 ticks left on the first quarter clock.
After the teams exchanged punts, Virginia Tech took the lead on a 20-yard touchdown run off a pitchout to the right side by Williams.
Virginia Tech forced a punt on Virginia’s next possession and Matt Waldron lined up for a 40-yard field goal, but missed and Randolph countered with a 41-yard field goal with 38 seconds left to make it a one-point game heading into the break.
Virginia Tech leads the series, 49-37-5, and has taken the last six games…Wilson finished the game with six carries for 55 yards… Danny Coale had six catches for 135 yards for the Hokies…Virginia Tech totaled 485 yards with 300 coming on the ground, while Virginia had 293 yards.
