Brett Favre has been a fantasy stud this season and considering he’s on his third team in three years, you could even consider him one of the big surprises of the season. Few fantasy owners (and even fewer outside of Minnesota) drafted Brett Favre as the #1 QB on their fantasy team. Favre has certainly performed though; his 3,149 passing yards ranks 8th in the league and he’s second only to Drew Brees in TD passes with 26. He’s even kept his interceptions down with a surprisingly low total of five. If you’re heading into your fantasy playoffs with Favre in the lineup, you’re probably feeling pretty good about yourself right now.
Midnight For Cinderella Favre?
Well let this be a smack upside the head to you: Brett Favre is terrible in December.
I don’t know if it’s the cold or the pressure or age creeping up on him, but whatever the reason Brett Favre stinks later in the season.
Here are his touchdown/interception ratios for games in December for the past five seasons:
2008: 2/8
2007: 6/5
2006: 4/8
2005: 0/9
2004: 6/6
Total: 18/36
Over five years Brett Favre has thrown twice as many interceptions as touchdowns in December! His horrendous two touchdown/eight interception skid last season kept the Jets out of the playoffs and sent him packing out of New York. Will this year be different?
He has Adrian Peterson this season and his team plays in a dome, that has to help right? Remember how I mentioned that he only had five interceptions this season? Two of them came on Sunday (December 6th) so he’s back at it for 2009. That game was played in warm and toasty Phoenix too.
Favre has one game against a tough Bengals team at home, then two games on the road: an afternoon game at Carolina and a Monday Night game in Chicago. That Bears game will NOT be warm and toasty and it’s Week 16, probably the week of your fantasy championship.
The way Favre is playing makes it hard to bench him, but if you look at the history there are reasons to be worried. Brett Favre may be playing agelessly, but eventually age catches up to everyone.
