No. 12 Michigan State Stomps In-State Rival Oakland
East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Draymond Green finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, as 12th-ranked Michigan State routed Oakland, 88-57, at the Breslin Center.
Kalin Lucas also netted 19, while Delvon Roe went for 11 points for Michigan State (8-2), which claimed a 69-56 victory over The Citadel on Monday. The Spartans have yet to lose at home this season.
Keith Benson had a game-high 21 points to go along with 11 boards for Oakland (4-5), which was coming off an 84-76 decision over IPFW last Saturday and had won two of three coming into the contest. Johnathon Jones added nine points and four rebounds in defeat.
After a sluggish beginning to the game, Garrick Sherman’s jumper just under six minutes in sent the Spartans on a 25-3 run. After Raymar Morgan finished it off with a pair of free throws, Michigan State was up 30-7 with about 6 1/2 minutes to play in the half.
Green and Lucas drained back-to-back jumpers to close out the half and put MSU up by a commanding 44-21 score at the break.
The outcome was never in doubt in the second half as the Spartans held a comfortable double-digit lead throughout on the way to the easy victory.
Michigan State has won all nine meetings with Oakland, including an 82-66 decision in 2008...MSU shot 56.3 percent from the field, but made only 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from three-point range...Oakland made 34.5 percent of its shots and a woeful 25 percent (5-of-20) from beyond the arc.
