Yahoo Rivals has just reported that former Buffalo University football coach Turner Gill has officially been named the new head coach at Kansas.
Kansas Reportedly Hires Turner Gill As New Football Coach
Gill had losing seasons in three of his four years, including a 5-7 mark in 2009.
In 2008, Buffalo went 8-6 and won the MAC title.
Gill emerged from a list of candidates that included Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh and East Carolina’s Skip Holtz.
The position was recently vacated by Mark Mangino, who resigned following pressure from an internal investigation of treatment of his players. Kansas finished at at disappointing 5-7 this season.
Our SB Nation blog, Rock Chalk Talk, anticipated the likelihood of this move and already has analysis to offer on Gill:
Gill is a guy that someone is going to give a shot to someday, it’s up to Lew to decide if Kansas is the school that wants to take that shot. It could end up being one hell of a hire or it could be one that Lew will live to regret. Regardless this isn’t the “homerun” hire so it’s bound to stir some emotions after the way Manginogate went down.
Personally, I think Kansas could do a lot worse than Gill and giving a young energetic guy with ties to the Big 12 a shot could prove to be a great move. Gill might not be my first choice, but he’s a choice I could support 100%.
