Review: Chad Ochocinco’s Touchdown Celebration
↵When great artists are under great pressure to outdo themselves, the result is almost invariably disappointing. Chad Ochocinco, who was fundamental to the rise of the Cincinnati touchdown celebration scene, released Week 13’s Sombrero Antics to scathing reviews.
↵In the aftermath of such disappointment, and mired in creative differences, Ochocinco nearly broke up. Desperation, though, resulted in postmodern brilliance. Week 14’s High Five, Buddy is a masterpiece that we, as a culture, may not be ready to digest yet.

↵After recording a receiving touchdown at the legendary Minnesota End Zone, with the help of producer Carson Palmer (Chris Henry, T.J. Houshmandzadeh), Ochocinco emerged with a simple high-five and chest bump to a teammate. A jog to the sidelines caps off a truly minimalist effort. It’s tempting to wax poetic over what is clearly a bold new direction in Ochocinco’s career. It borrows tastefully from the humility of Barry Sanders’ celebrations and Larry Johnson’s sullen disposition, and wraps it all into a hyper-pedestrian fever dream that captures -- almost painfully -- the sluggish, overwhelmed ouevre of this post-millennial landscape.
