It turns out the Galaxy’s “major announcement” today did, indeed, center on Landon Donovan, as the team announced that Donovan will spend the early part of 2010 on a “loan” to Everton, of the English Premier League. In advance of his loan, though, the team also announced a contract extension through 2013, security that will no doubt help allay the fears of US Soccer fans wary of losing their biggest superstar to the Premier League.
Donovan Signs Extension, Will Head To Europe Early In 2010
From Goal.com:
After signing a new four-year deal with Major League Soccer, Landon Donovan is headed to England for a short-term loan deal with Everton.
Rumors of the move have been circulating for a couple of weeks and Donovan, along with the Los Angeles Galaxy made the move official today at a press conference in LA.
The 27-year-old is coming off one of his best seasons as a pro and is obviously ready to give Europe another try. The move to Everton reunites Donovan with USA teammate Tim Howard. […]
By signing a new contract with MLS, it ensures that Donovan will return to the United States following the duration of the loan.
Donovan, who spent last winter moonlighting with the powerhouse Bayern Munich, figures to be a key contributor for Everton, where it’s likely that he’ll start. His success in that role should provide a good barometer as to how far Donovan’s come personally, and how far American soccer has come, in general. Still, however successful his stint, it appears he’ll be back in the States by March 15, and suiting up with the Galaxy shortly thereafter. Everybody wins!
