Busy Running Backs On Really Bad Teams

The New York Times' NFL blog has an interesting article on Rams RB Stephen Jackson. Jackson currently leads the league with 238 carries but the Rams are pretty terrible. I hadn't realized how seldom that happens.

Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson is second to Jackson in carries with 230. Obviously, if Jackson and the Rams stay on pace, it will be unusual. But even if the Rams win a few more games, if Jackson leads the league in carries, it will still be pretty rare. Since 1970, the league’s leading ball carrier has played for a team with a losing record just six times.

It’s not just limited to the rush leader either. Among the NFL’s top ten in rushing attempts, Chris Johnson (3rd), Thomas Jones (4th), DeAngelo Williams (8th) and Kevin Smith (10th) all play for teams with losing records. That’s three of the top four and half of the top ten.

Running backs on “good” NFL teams usually get the most preseason fantasy hype, but it’s good to remember that “bad” NFL teams have plenty of fantasy value too.
