Hopkins Wins, Jones Jr. Loses, Proposed Rematch Less Enticing Than Before

Back in September, Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins agreed in principle to a 2010 rematch. Today (or yesterday or possibly even tomorrow, depending on what time zone you’re in...) that rematch became slightly less enticing.

Earlier today, Roy Jones Jr. was knocked out in the first round by Aussie Danny Green, who scored what may have been the most thrilling and maybe globally important victory in Australian boxing history.

Meanwhile, Bernard Hopkins scored a lopsided unanimous decision against Mexico’s Enrique Ornelas in a light heavyweight bout, winning 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110 in Philadelphia.

SBNation’s Bad Left Hook says the idea of paying to watch Hopkins-Jones, Jr. II sounds about as appealing as watching both of them read from the Encyclopedia Brittanica:

If they go ahead with Hopkins-Jones II as a pay-per-view event at this point, they’re going to both be embarrassed by the buys the fight receives. Neither of them have drawn at all in recent years, and the last time both had major PPV fights, they went back-to-back with rotten performances, Hopkins against Kelly Pavlik in October 2008, and Jones against Joe Calzaghe the next month. I get the feeling that this rematch -- especially now -- is only for the biggest fans of both men, and I don’t think there’s a ton of those folks left. Hopkins has never really been any sort of major star, as great as he is, and Jones’ most popular days are well in the past.

One good thing did come out of the evening. This gem of a quote from Bernard Hopkins when asked about Roy Jones’ decision to fight in Australia.

“You know what happens when you go over to Europe, that’s why I would never go there.”

Bernard’s still got it.
