FSU 66, No. 22 Georgia Tech 59: Noles Need Five Extra Minutes
December 20 - Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Ryan Reid scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, as Florida State opened conference play with a 66-59 overtime win over 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Deividas Dulkys had 12 points and Chris Singleton added 10 for the Seminoles (10-2, 1-0 ACC), who have won four games in a row. Solomon Alabi totaled 12 rebounds and nine points in the win.
Zachery Peacock scored 17 points to pace the Yellow Jackets (8-2, 0-1), who had a seven-game winning streak snapped. Mfon Udofia contributed 12 points, while Derrick Favors finished with 12 boards and eight points in a losing effort.
A Singleton jumper gave Florida State a 45-37 lead with about 6 1/2 minutes left in regulation. Reid hit a layup to make it 54-49 with two minutes remaining. Udofia knocked down a trey and Peacock nailed a jumper from the foul line with 29.5 seconds to go, tying the score at 54 and forcing overtime.
Peacock sank another shot from beyond the arc to begin the extra session, but the visitors led 61-59 after Singleton drove the lane and made a layup with about a minute remaining.
D’Andre Bell missed a three-pointer for Georgia Tech and Derwin Kitchen was fouled after securing the defensive rebound. He made his first attempt from the charity stripe, but was off the mark with the second free throw. However, he managed to grab his own miss and was immediately fouled again.
Kitchen made 1-of-2 for a 63-59 Florida State lead. Udofia committed an offensive foul on the Yellow Jackets’ next possession. Luke Loucks gave the Seminoles a five-point advantage with a 1-for-2 trip at the line.
Udofia then fired up a three that didn’t fall and Jordan DeMercy cemented the win with a layup.
Favors made a layup for a 14-11 Yellow Jackets lead, but Florida State ripped off seven straight points to move ahead. Georgia Tech tied the game at 21 when Peacock nailed a three-pointer with a little over three minutes remaining in the first half.
The Seminoles ended the frame on a 6-1 run and led 27-22 at the break.
Florida State leads the all-time series, 33-27...Kitchen had eight rebounds, seven points and six assists...The Seminoles shot 40 percent from the floor, while Georgia Tech made just 32.9 percent of its shots.
