Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - DeMarcus Cousins finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, as third-ranked Kentucky demolished Drexel, 88-44, and became the first basketball program to claim its 2,000th win in NCAA history.
Patrick Patterson also netted 18 points, while John Wall went for 16 points and seven assists for Kentucky (12-0), which registered its first-ever win on February 18, 1903, an 11-10 decision against Lexington YMCA. The Wildcats, who were coming off a 90-69 rout of Austin Peay on Saturday, shot 53.4 percent from the floor, including an impressive 9-of-13 from three-point territory.
Samme Givens had a team-best 11 points to go with six rebounds for Drexel (6-6), which beat Cal State-Northridge on Friday and had won three straight coming into the contest. Chris Fouch and Shannon Givens each ended with eight points for the Dragons, who shot only 30.9 percent from the field and 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats got off to a good start in pursuit of their 2,000th victory, jumping out to a 15-3 lead. Cousins accounted for eight during the stretch and Wall finished it off with a three-point play.
The UK advantage ballooned to 33-9 on a Daniel Orton jumper near the midway point, and it got worse for the Dragons in the closing minutes of the half. Patterson hit four from the stripe and Wall made three layups in a 10-0 run that gave the hosts a commanding 56-20 lead at the break.
Drexel never threatened the outcome in the second half as Kentucky reeled off the first 10 points. Darius Miller drilled a three-ball with just under 10 minutes to play to put the Wildcats up 78-29, and they cruised the rest of the way.
This was the first-ever meeting between Kentucky and Drexel on the hardwood...Ramon Harris had nine points for UK, which held a 45-22 rebounding edge.
