Remember 1997? It was the last time the Baltimore Orioles actually competed in the American League East (98 wins!). They mattered. They were a contender. Since then ... well, not so much.
‘Orioles: A.L. Central Champions’ Has A Nice Ring To It
↵Some O’s fans wish they could just transplant their team into the A.L. Central and forget about those damn Yanks and Sox. But how would the Orioles actually do in a different division? Stacey from Camden Chat takes a stab at answering that very question in an effort to ease the pain of some Orioles fans.
↵Ouch.
↵Over a span of nine years, Stacey concludes, the Orioles would be just 25 games better. A solid .452 winning percentage. Not even good enough to compete in the International League, let alone the A.L. Central.
↵That’s certainly not the result Orioles fans wanted to hear. While the math is flawed -- and Stacey admits that -- the theory isn’t that far off base.
↵Let’s make everyone happy and do this: since there are two Pennsylvania teams in the National League (Phillies and Pirates), the Pirates should move to the American League East and uproot the Orioles to the National League Central. Sure, Pirates fans wouldn’t be too happy, but the O’s would be partying like it was 1997.
↵Do it, Bud. Resurrect the Birds!
