Titans Beat Themselves, Though Perhaps Not This Literally

In the first half of the Chargers-Titans game, the color commentary repeatedly observed that the Titans were “beating themselves.” Indeed, Tennessee found itself down 21-10 at halftime, thanks in part to a multitude of silly penalties. But “beating themselves” isn’t supposed to be taken in strictly literal terms, right? Right?

↵I have to confess that this screen grab is misleading -- Titans defensive end Dave Ball merely jumped three yards off-sides completely unprovoked, and we see him here trying to scurry back as though nobody had noticed.

↵By the way, we’re hearing over and over that this game was a must-win for the Titans. If you really want to split hairs, though, you can say that this was a must-win or -tie.
