Fancy Jeans Not Fancy Enough for Tressel

Jim Tressel

Terrelle Pryor may be eager to defend the honor of the Big Ten, but by coch Ohio State coach Jim Tressel’s standards, he isn’t dressing the part of a quarterback deserving of respect. On Sunday night, as the team was boarding a bus to head to a Rose Bowl dinner, he was turned away by his coach for not dressing in a manner befitting such a hallowed event.
↵↵⇥The sophomore quarterback, along with senior captain and defensive lineman Doug Worthington and junior defensive end Thaddeus Gibson, were left behind by coach Jim Tressel from the team’s trip to Lawry’s, a prime rib restaurant in Beverly Hills, because they didn’t have dress pants to wear to the traditional Rose Bowl event.
↵⇥ Pryor said he showed up ready to board the team bus in jeans, and the Buckeyes went on without him.
↵⇥ “They were nice jeans,” Pryor said. “But Coach Tress is a classy guy.”
↵⇥ So Pryor said he, Worthington and Gibson found their own prime rib at a local mall.
↵⇥ “I just didn’t think it should have been a big deal about it,” Pryor said. “Some of my teammates said it wasn’t as classy as it was supposed to be. But Coach Tress is a classy guy, and what he wants we have to do. We just forgot our pants. Nothing against the team or anything like that. I apologize to the team ... I’m kind of mad we missed a good meal, a free meal at that.”
↵↵Draconian, classy. ↵However you want to define it, the sweater vested one demands refinement. You would think a guy playing injured as Pryor clearly is would be granted an iota of leeway to get away with expensive jeans in lieu of slacks at an L.A. restaurant, where I’m sure Pryor wouldn’t be the only one considering jeans as formalwear.
↵
↵And though I imagine they found a Cheesecake Factory or somesuch chain restaurant at a local mall, I can’t shake the images of food court prime rib.
