In the two games that superstar Alexander Ovechkin has been suspended for his knee-check on Tim Gleason, the Capitals have scored fourteen goals (six against Florida, eight against Philly). So much for the Capitals’ offense being a one man band.

↵Of course the Capitals have been helped by the fact that in both games opposing players have racked up significant penalty minutes from one incident. In the Florida game, Mike Duco gave the Capitals seven consecutive minutes of powerplay time (and Bryan Allen gave the Caps a full two-minute 5-on-3); in the Flyers game, Dan Carcillo gave the Capitals nine consecutive minutes of powerplay time. In both cases, the Capitals made their opponents pay, scoring twice on Duco’s penalties and three times on Carcillo’s.
↵The Capitals are showing what the Red Wings did for years: a team does not necessarily need a “tough guy” to be successful. A team just needs a powerplay capable of punishing the opposition for dumb penalties.
