Weekend Wake Up: Greg Oden, Evan Turner Hurt; Kimbo Slice Wins
Down Goes Oden. Greg Oden is a colossus of a man, blessed with enormous athletic talent. But as the queasy video above shows, he may also be cursed with a skeleton made of Kleenex. Oden’s fractured kneecap is likely his second season-ending injury in three NBA seasons, and that means the Sam Bowie comparisons and brickbats tossed general manager Kevin Pritchard’s way will only multiply in the coming weeks. You have to hope the good thoughts for Oden, a good guy seemingly betrayed by his body, will do the same. (At least the Blazers got a scintillating win last night.)
Bucks Must Carry On Without Turner. Ohio State had a bad Saturday: Evan Turner, their multi-talented stud, went up for a dunk and came down on his back. He’ll be out for two months, maybe more, and, as the current Buckeyes leader in points, rebounds, and assists, leaves a gaping hole for Thad Matta to fill.
No Kimbo Slide. It wasn’t helped by an electric day of college football taking much of the attention of the sporting public, but the UFC had an excellent night. Their Ultimate Fighter 10 concluded with Kimbo Slice winning his first UFC bout, which means one of the few household names in mixed martial arts may still be ticketed for stardom after a long and disappointing transition from street fights on YouTube to polygonal cages with mats.
