YouTubery: Red Doesn’t Like Pistol Pete’s Moves

↵
↵Pete Maravich was a legend, a master showman known for snazzy passes and all-around flair; Red Auerbach, a grouchy old dude who oversaw the birth of basketball and won like thirty championships. Indeed, a match made in heaven. You’d expect nothing less than some sparks flying somewhere.↵
↵
↵Here’s a deleted scene from “Red on Roundball,” a program that allowed Auerbach to spread his gospel to impressionable kids. Of course, the last thing he wanted for them was to fall under the sway of Pistol Pete, which begs the question of why the Celtics don would’ve had Maravich on in the first place. You’d figure the point was for Maravich to do something awesome, and then have Auerbach rant about it so that kids would be amply discouraged. Though maybe Red was counting on Pete’s pass going awry, or thinking of some way to debunk it. Instead, all he could do was angrily tell the audience that what they saw, while awesome and effective, was a sin that would keep them from ever attaining a career in basketball. With the implication that he, Red Auerbach, would see to that personally.↵
