Mischievous Mascot Benched For Title Game

↵That wacky mascot battle from the WAC Tournament in Reno Friday night spilled over to Saturday’s title game. A local Nevada fan paid Big Blue, the cartoonish bull mascot for Utah State, $100 to steal the mustache of the humanoid New Mexico State Pistol Pete (a cowboy with Stan Van Gundy’s facial hair style). Pete didn’t like the cut of Blue’s jib and choked him out. All this happened in the closing seconds of a tight elimination game.

↵Utah State won, but the university decided to suspend Big Blue for the championship game.↵↵⇥Utah State said in a statement Saturday that the university apologized to NMSU officials following the incident. The school said the $100 Big Blue accepted for the evil deed will be donated to Kids Kottage, a shelter for abused and neglected children in Reno.

↵⇥The man confirmed to The Associated Press Friday night that he did in fact pay the mascot the $100, but declined to provide his name. He said he did not expect the NMSU mascot to respond the way he did.↵↵If the man didn’t expect some sort of scuffle, why did he blow $100 on the initial prank?
