Who Knew Nellie Was So ‘Gangsta’?

Look, I know the Golden State Warriors don’t matter to most NBA fans. But whenever Don Nelson’s around, crazy stuff goes down, or snakes and Pepsi come out of people’s noses. That’s the honest truth. If only he’d be attached to a winning team again.↵

↵Anyway, from HOOPSWORLD, here’s Al Harrington on his former coach:↵↵⇥“Nellie’s a gangsta,” Harrington said with a big smile. “He just does whatever he wants.” Harrington went on to imply that the Warriors’ players would have been happier had Nellie stepped down and assistant coach Keith Smart stepped into the lead role.↵⇥

↵⇥“Coach Smart, I think he would’ve been a great coach there when they had a chance to make a change,” said Harrington. “Guys were really looking forward to getting to play for him if Nellie did step down.”↵↵

Oddly, this jocular, almost admiring remark, and “big smile”, came as a belated reaction to Nelson’s “(Harrington) thinks he’s a superstar. I think he’s a very good player” remarks.↵

↵Oh, and Harrington shoots down the rumors that New York is looking to move him. He’s got a player option for next season, which means he’ll be off the books by 2010. But -- and this must come as a bummer to Knicks fans who have come to equate each and every move with preparing for that season of inevitable deliverance -- this team has more pressing, relatively mundane concerns. Like what do they do with David Lee and Nate Robinson, both of whom could command a lot or a little on the open market, depending on how many teams drop their 2010 fantasies sooner rather than later.↵
