LeBron’s Advisor Meets With N.Y. ... About Curry

I’m not entirely sure what Knicks Blog is driving at with the following passage, but it makes me want to say “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” twice and then laugh at myself for it. It concerns Eddy Curry, on the surface, but then seems to lead somewhere far more sinister:↵↵⇥When Knicks president Donnie Walsh met briefly with William Wesley before Wednesday’s season finale, their conversation focused on the off-season conditioning program of Eddy Curry. Whether Curry, who appeared in just three games, will follow his weight-lifting, weight-reducing regime is anyone’s guest.↵⇥

↵⇥But Wesley’s first appearance at the Garden this year was also noteworthy because not only is he an adviser to Curry, but Wesley is also one of LeBron James’ most trusted confidants. And in case you haven’t heard, James will be a free agent next summer and the Knicks are creating salary cap space to sign him.↵↵First of all, having Wesley come in and mediate your relationship with the front office strikes me as kind of weird. I know players never really quit a guy like him, but aren’t real agents supposed to take their place? Is he like a spiritual adviser or clergyman, who can do and say things with a frankness that agents have to avoid? Given Curry’s recent unhappiness and the tricky situation he’s in with New York, maybe things are at that “speak man-to-man with Wes, he’s like family” stage. But again, it’s a remarkably informal, maybe even illegitimate, line of communication for an NBA veteran to open up.↵

↵And then there’s the LeBron mention. Seems like Wesley is showing up in some form of crisis management capacity, or at least to talk to Walsh outside of the confines of business about Curry’s future. Am I the only one who noticed that the Knicks as currently constructed aren’t of any interest to James, and that to put together a contender, the team would most certainly have to cut ties with Curry? So yeah, there’s some LeBron in the air, but if anything, it’s working against the actual -- and fairly remarkable -- bit of backroom intrigue that we find out about here.↵
