What Not to Wear, Starring Brian Cashman

↵
↵In case you were wondering, that premiere (regular season) Saturday matinee at the new Yankee Stadium didn’t get much better after Cleveland’s 14-run second inning. The Indians ended up with a 22-4 win, with New York’s rotation bordering on shambles. But the problems, obviously, existed before Saturday and will exist beyond this weekend. For that, Matt Taibbi (writing for Men’s Journal blames Brian Cashman in an acid-laden column on the matter.↵↵⇥[O]bjectively speaking, the job of New York Yankees general manager should be the single most failure-proof position not only in sports but in all of human society. Giving a normal, red-blooded, pattern-baldness-suffering American male access to the Steinbrenner fortune and asking him to buy 25 baseball players a year in an unregulated market is no different, in any meaningful way, from handing Sarah Jessica Parker a blank check and asking her to fill a three-bedroom apartment with shoes and dresses. And we’re not even asking her to get good deals. All we ask is that the outfits match.↵↵Taibbi credits Cashman’s longevity to duplicity and savvy political maneuvering within the organization and through the press. Of course, as this season begins in frightful fashion, those bungee cords can hold only so long. Embarrassing home losses don’t help, and getting completely undressed in print doesn’t help.

↵Thanks, Reed.↵
