Umpire Sends Rockies Pitcher to the DL

Umpire Bill Welke probably isn’t evil. He probably meant well. But when he cleared Freddy Sanchez’s bat from home plate after a double on Sunday, he kind of took out a Rockies reliever ...↵↵⇥As the pitcher ran to back up home plate, umpire Bill Welke tossed the bat out of the way to clear space. It landed directly under Daley’s left foot on his next stride.↵⇥↵⇥“It was just a freak accident,” said Daley, who wore a protective boot after the game.↵⇥

↵↵↵X-rays were negative and the injury was diagnosed as a sprain. There are also unconfirmed and completely made up reports that Welke so enjoyed what he did to Daley that he immediately went to a grocery store and started rolling produce along the ground for people to “accidentally” trip over. Why did he do it? Because Welke discovered a guiding principle of life: people tripping and falling is almost always funny.↵
