Labonte Gives Fifth Graders Lift to School‏

At this point in the school year, most students are counting down the days until they are done with school and free to enjoy the splendors of summer. However on Friday, Janak Jaini and Kara Satterwhite of Cold Harbor Elementary in Mechanicsville, Va. were raring to go to school because they were being driven there by NASCAR driver and former Cup Champion, Bobby Labonte as part of the Ask.com Safe Search Schools Program.

"The time with Bobby was awesome and flew by in what seemed like a second," said Jaini. "The coolest part was pulling up to the school and seeing all my friends screaming their heads off!"

"I was pretty much in shock the whole time," said Satterwhite. "I just couldn’t believe I was riding to school with Bobby Labonte!"

As part of the program, elementary school teachers, librarians and computer specialists in the Richmond, Va. area conducted Internet safety lessons and worked with students to generate submissions that included their own ideas about how to teach online safety. After careful consideration, Cold Harbor Elementary was selected by a Blue Ribbon Panel of experts out of 185 entries for the recognition which also included a donation of $10,000 in new computers for the school from Ask.com.

"It’s great to see children my own kids’ ages engaged and really enjoying learning about safely exploring the worlds available to them online," said Labonte. "Starting my day by giving a ‘lift’ – literally – to a young boy and girl as honored Cold Harbor Elementary student passengers is a gift in itself."
