Give Serena Williams Her Point and Nobody Gets Hurt

I’ll just toss this right out there: in my mind, Serena Williams can pretty much do whatever she wants. Those pipes, that attitude, and that backhand? Forget about it.

↵Tennis officials don’t always see it my way, which is probably good for the sport as a whole; tennis would be unwatchable if one player got every call (kinda the same with basketball and LeBron). One blown call today riled Williams up, though, and things got a little awesome.
↵
↵Background: a player can’t win a point if a ball hits their body. Serena, facing Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, lost a point on a ball that, acccording to NBC’s Live @ The French Open blog, clearly hit Martinez Sanchez: ↵↵⇥Serena argued a bit and lost. Her opponent made no attempt to admit to the fact that the ball went off her arm. The officials neglected to force the issue by doing so much as ask Martinez Sanchez whether the ball hit her or not. I can’t imagine that would have been so difficult or controversial. Go watch the highlights if you haven’t seen it - but it’s pretty ridiculous. ↵↵The match went on after that, Serena won, and then the fun begins. Serena calls it cheating, then backs off; Martinez Sanchez says it didn’t hit her, temperatures rise, and--oh, Serena, you want to take this? ↵↵⇥↵⇥SW: I looked at her dead in the eye...Just be honest if you hit the ball or not. I mean, hello. It totally hit her. ↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥R: Hence the comment, “she better not come to net again?” ↵⇥
↵⇥↵⇥SW: You guys heard that?...Well, I am from Compton, so, you know. ↵⇥
↵↵There’s keeping it real, then there’s “playing tennis to kill” keeping it real. Attagirl.↵
