↵It’s Too Bad Bethpage Is Wasted on Long Island

↵Before this weekend’s US Open, the last we’d heard from Long Island was an idiotic secession campaign that was ably dismantled by the Daily Show. Now they’re hosting a major golf tournament, and reminding us all exactly why they’re such easy targets:↵↵⇥At 6:42 p.m., dozens of drunken spectators at Hole 10 taunted [Tiger] Woods as he prepared to start his third round in the rain.
↵⇥
↵⇥“We’re on Long Island, baby, where men are men!” one fan yelled. “Put that umbrella down!”
↵⇥
↵⇥The taunts were mixed with cheers from the majority of the crowd.↵↵Verrry classy, gentlemen. Honestly, it should have been obvious that we were in for a rough weekend on Friday when one fan near a microphone bellowed “ALEXANDER HAMILTON” over the course of about 10 seconds, nearly rendering the staid Mike Tirico speechless.
↵
↵And really, we don’t see what the fun is in any of that. Sure, it might seem like the Long Islanders are “taking them down a notch” and all that, but when they’re reaching so far into the bag of tricks to pull out the “real man” card to get a reaction, well, what good is that? The golfers aren’t going to respond or give the hecklers the punch in the face they so richly deserve; if they really want to direct undeserved insults at famous rich people under the cloak of anonymty and protection from retribution, they already have a place to do that: the comment section of Youtube.↵
