Sportwriters, start↵your cluckin’ engines. Lane Kiffin thinks a guy who hasn’t reached↵high school has a purty backpedal: ↵↵⇥“Yes, I committed to Tennessee,” Evan [Berry] said. “It’s the only↵⇥college I know right now and it seems the best for me. My dad went there↵⇥and my brother is there now.”↵↵↵It’s time once again for Recruiting ↵Pedo Bear↵Goes Too Far: Evan Berry, the younger brother of Tennessee secondary↵ninja Eric, has committed to Tennessee. He’s 13. Berry’s favorite things↵aside from Tennessee football are Hannah Montana, his rubber band↵collection, and giving crotchety old columnists material with which to↵rail against the internet and/or Lane Kiffin. ↵
Evan Berry Is Recruitin’ Jailbait

↵
↵↵The chances some columnist↵desperate for material in the doldrums of summer takes this opportunity↵to rail against the recruiting industry that’s rapidly supplanting him:↵100 percent. Watch this↵Google news search, if you’re weird.↵
↵↵Yes, it’s probably unwise to offer a scholarship to a kid who barely↵weighs more than Layla Kiffin. For comparison, here’s Michael Jackson at↵13. But you know, whatever. Chances this is a solid commitment are↵slim. This gambit’s been tried before. ↵
↵
↵When Chris Leak was a mewling tyke -- also in ninth grade -- he committed↵to Wake Forest to play with his brother CJ, then a Demon Deacons↵quarterback. He decommitted when CJ transferred to Tennessee,↵ironically, and had the Vols #1 on his list until, as Matt Hayes tells↵it, his older brother got↵screwed over by the Tennessee coaches:↵
↵↵⇥Two years ago, he [C.J.] started the Georgia game for an injured↵⇥[Casey] Clausen and was replaced early in the first quarter by freshman↵⇥James Banks because the Vols were struggling on offense. That snub↵⇥convinced Chris Leak to back off of the Vols in the recruiting process↵⇥and embrace Florida.↵↵↵Leak bounced back from underclassman losses against the Vols to↵win his last two; in his senior year he accounted for all 21 of↵Florida’s points in the Gators’ 21-20 win. Florida won the↵national title. Someone get Kiffin a time machine so we can blame this↵on him.↵
↵↵Of course, there’s little chance the younger Berry sees his brother↵undergo a similar benching. When Rocky↵Top Talk counted down the top 15 plays of Tennessee’s 2008 season,↵the top three were all↵Berry, as were seven↵of the 15 candidates. ↵
↵↵But we should file this under Tennessee PR stunts, right? At this↵point, they could beat Florida and I would shrug and say “meh ... PR↵stunt.”↵
