Don’t Look Now, But Roy Halladay Is Rolling

If the Cy Young Award were handed out in the first month or two of the season, then the “Zack Attack,” Zack Greinke, would have walked away with the trophy, and nobody would have batted an eye. Something about an ERA under 1.00 through his first eight starts and all. But--and this may come as a surprise--they don’t give it out in May. Weird, we know.
And while Greinke’s still at a 1.55 ERA, here comes Roy Halladay. The Jays’ ultra-steady righty is in a groove, having just shut out Greinke’s Royals for a 4-0 win this afternoon. With the 97-pitch, 6 K outing, Halladay’s record moves to 10-1 with a 2.52 ERA; more importantly, it may have pushed Halladay’s resume past Greinke’s for the best overall in the majors.
But then again, it’s only June.
In many ways, Halladay is a throwback; he has spent his entire 12-year career with the Blue Jays, never playing the free agent field despite being likely to command a top-5 salary in a larger market. Further, he’s a complete game machine, unafraid to push his pitch count past 130 as the endgame approaches. He’s not demonstrative or loud-mouthed; he just pitches and wins.↵
