Weis’s Schematic Advantage Strikes Again: Ben Turk, Punter, Has Incredibly Strong Arms

Lou Holtz created quite a stir recently when he predicted Notre Dame↵would be in the national championship game,↵thanks in large part to their terrible schedule. Given Notre Dame’s 1-14↵record against teams with a winning record over the past two years, this↵could be an argument for all of Notre Dame’s opponents as well, but↵whatever.↵↵The widespread chuckling at Crazy Uncle Lou was based on secret↵information only Holtz was privy to:↵
↵↵⇥“The USC kicker benched 225, I think 25 (times),” said Irish↵⇥freshman punter Ben Turk, “and↵⇥I got 26.”↵⇥
↵⇥
↵⇥Yes, you heard that right. Ben Turk, the 5-foot-11, 193-pound↵⇥newcomer - the punter, of all people - did twenty-six reps with 225↵⇥pounds on the bench.↵⇥Twenty-six. That’s not a typo.↵↵Wow! Notre Dame’s punter has really strong arms. Really, really strong↵arms. He can do twenty-five more 225s than Notre Dame’s offensive line↵can do!↵↵He will use his newfound power to throw punts 80 yards, and this will↵work brilliantly when Michigan’s Martavious Odoms actually catches them. (He’s been threatened with castration if he doesn’t hold onto every ball he gets his fingers on this year after fumbling six times in the last↵four games of the year, you see.)↵
↵↵After that ... eh ... has Notre Dame shown you its shiny wide receivers?↵And its win over Hawaii?↵
