Just Like the Old Boss: Mangini Remains Indecisive on QB Situation

↵Eric Mangini appears to be content to repeat some of the mistakes of predecessor Romeo Crennel, as well as make some new ones all his own.↵↵It was just two years ago that Crennel relied upon a coin flip to decide his starting quarterback going into Week 1 of the ‘07 season. Luck favored Charlie Frye that day, but events didn’t play out much in his favor after that - he was yanked in the first half of a season-opening 34-7 drubbing by the Steelers. Frye was dealt later in the season to the Seahawks while replacement Derek Anderson wound up as a Pro Bowl alternate after throwing for nearly 3,800 yards and 29 touchdowns.↵
↵↵Anderson faltered under the weight of high expectations early last year, and most Browns fans were overjoyed once Brady Quinn finally got a chance to start late in the year. While not spectacular -- Quinn threw for only two touchdowns and two interceptions in three starts -- it seemed as though the 1st-round pick had shown enough flashes of adequacy to have taken the job from the struggling veteran.↵
↵↵Not so! Mangini doesn’t look to be close to making a call on who’s going to be the starter at the outset of the season, saying both Quinn and Anderson will split time with the first unit offense during Saturday’s preseason game against the Titans. After an offseason in which reports of negative morale poured out from sources close to the Browns, this is another potential situation that could, er, dog Cleveland throughout the season unless it’s resolved quickly. ↵
↵↵During an offseason that saw Kellen Winslow Jr. shipped to Tampa Bay for picks, one has to question why the two-headed quarterback monster wasn’t broken up in order to improve a team otherwise riddled with holes. Just ask the Chiefs how their quarterback-by-committee system served them last year.↵
