Michael Vick Celebration Postponed, But Probably Not Why You Think

Say what you will about the return of Michael Vick to the NFL -- and I’m firmly in the camp that says he’s paid his price and should be allowed back into the league -- but the notion of a “Michael Vick Community Celebration” always seemed a little misplaced at best and horribly inappropriate in the eyes of many.↵↵But don’t worry, the thing has been postponed. I mean surely, someone decided it was maybe a little bit brash to celebrate Michael Vick so soon, particularly as he’s fighting the biggest PR battle of his life before he can even get back on an NFL roster. Well, not so much. Turns out Vick just had a scheduling conflict ... to attend an event for the Humane Society of the United States.↵
↵↵⇥“We want to say as an organization we’re not intimidated and we won’t waiver in our support of Michael Vick,” [Celebration organizer Andrew] Shannon said. “We believe in forgiveness and we believe in redemption so we believe that Mr. Vick should be able to move forward with his life and make a livelihood.”↵↵↵While I’m of the same belief that Vick should be able to move forward and make a livelihood, does that mean he needs a day of celebration? And I ask this as a serious question because I don’t know: Who is managing Michael Vick’s career? Because that person probably needs to be replaced. Isn’t it in Vick’s best interest to be completely out of sight and out of mind until the next headline reads “Team X signs Michael Vick?”↵
↵↵When you Q-Rating is this toxic, it’s probably time to hide out for a bit until things cool off. Don’t believe it’s that bad? Go open up a Twitter search for the word “Vick.” You will find the strangest cross section of people you’ve ever come across in your life. But for as nuts as some of them are (or at least seem to be) NFL owners know that these people are also potential ticket buyers, and now more than ever they’re probably not trying to anger potential patrons.↵
