Despite a main event fight high in drama at UFC 102 the promotion’s president continues to deny that the UFC is interested in taking advantage of new rules passed allowing 5 round non-title fights for “special events.” From MMAJunkie.com:
UFC Continues To Say No To Five Round Non-Title Fights
“You know how many times I’ve been ringside and said, ‘God, I wish this was a five-round fight,’” White said after UFC 102. “I did it [on Sunday]. (UFC heavuweight champion) Brock (Lesnar) and I were watching the fight together, and we both said we wish that fight with Nogueira and Couture was five rounds.
“But, I think that’s what’s so special about fighting for the title. You fight for the title, and it’s a five-round fight; you don’t, it’s a three-round fight.”
Many MMA fans did anticipate the move to five round fights for main events in the future but even NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer says that the UFC has contacted him to express that they’re not interested in going that direction. If one of the greatest fights of the past five years couldn’t convince White that two extra rounds would be a great thing in some cases, it may be a situation where nothing ever will.
