While the Royals may be waving goodbye to two starter pitchers for the year, the White Sox may be seeing Jake Peavy back after his bullpen session was deemed a success:
(Injured) Arms Race: Royals, White Sox Face Problems with Starters
“Everything went well in the bullpen,” said White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper. “We got a really good workout in. He feels pretty good about it. I feel pretty good about it, too. The best I can tell you is we’ll see how he feels [Thursday] and continue to map out a plan for him to go out and pitch.”
“I’m just getting prepared to go out there and play,” Peavy said. “I went about as hard as we could go there for 50 to 60 pitches, and I felt good. I’m just trying to get that endurance back up to where I can go out and compete.”
Peavy has yet to pitch for the White Sox, which acquired him at the July 31 trading deadline. Peavy hasn’t pitched in a big league game since June 8. He was placed on the disabled list with a partially torn tendon in his right ankle.
For the Royals, a bad season just got even worse:
Royals starter Gil Meche is probably done for the year with a shoulder problem, and fellow right-hander Brian Bannister is flying to New York for a second opinion on his shoulder.
Royals manager Trey Hillman said on Thursday that Meche would most likely be shut down for the final weeks of the season. He declined to speculate on whether Bannister would need surgery.
The Royals did not disclose the exact nature of the problems.
With or without Meche and Bannister, the Royals aren’t going anywhere come October. Kansas City sits dead last in the American League with a 55-85 record.
