First-Place Tigers Get Swept By Last-Place Royals

Despite facing three spot starters on the worst team in their division, the Detroit Tigers were the ones who looked like the 55-win ballclub after getting swept out of Kansas City Thursday night. Alex Gordon and Alberto Callaspo homered for the Royals en route to a 7-4 victory. The win marks KC's first four-game winning streak since June.

For Tigers’ blog Bless You Boys, the series opened up a whole can of worms for the team:

Just as this team starts to look like it’s coming together, with all sorts of different ways to beat the opposition, it reminds us that it’s far from a perfect team. Just as we start to believe that this team might actually be capable of doing something in the playoffs, beating last year’s AL champs with authority, it gets swept by the last place team in its division.

The Tigers remain 5.5 up on the Twins for the division lead. Meanwhile, the Royals have moved all the way up to 20.5 games out of first. So close...
