Tom Cable has announced that Darren McFadden will be his starting running back. This seems a bit anticlimactic since most people figured this would be the outcome, but knowing the Raiders there was always some doubt. Cable says:
Darren McFadden Named Week 1 Starter
Q: Who is your starting running back?
Cable: Our starting running back will be Darren McFadden.
Q: Why?
Cable: I just think for everything that he is in terms of being multiple, running the football, catching the football. He’s shown a high level of consistency all through camp and certainly brings some explosiveness like we’re trying to build with this offense.
Q: Is being a starter not such a big deal here because you’ll use all three backs?
Cable: Yeah it’s probably not your typical deal where he’s going to go 25 times, something like that, but he’ll get the bulk of them for sure.Justin Fargas has been injured. He has experience which kept him in the race, but DMac has the skills, both running and catching the ball out of the backfield.
If he can stay healthy he has the ability to become a #1 fantasy starter, which is hard to say for anybody on the Raiders offense. For now, he is a good #2 running back and should be an every week starter unless you are unbelievably stacked at the position.
Michael Bush should be your handcuff to McFadden pushing Fargas to the #3, which gives the Raiders good depth at the position, but it looks like you won’t need to roster Fargas on your team unless something changes.
