Jay Cutler has been much better in the second half, but it hasn’t meant much for the overall tally: It’s still 12-10, and, to be frank, I’d like to see some offense. Defense is all well and good, but this is just gross.
It’s the 4th Quarter; Can We Get Some Offense? (Plus: Fake Punts Are a Really Bad Idea)
In the meantime, Bears wideout Earl Bennett just cost his team a first down -- his catch, by the way -- because he lined up offside before the Bears’ snap. Well played.
And even more well-played for the Bears: A fake punt attempt that sent Garrett Wolfe on a run attempt up the middle was promptly stopped by the Packers. The explanation for this idea doesn’t exist; it was awful and stupid and completely beyond all comprehension, and I have no idea what else to tell you about it. I’ll pound my head against my keyboard a few more times and see if anything comes to me.
UPDATE: Oh also: Lovie Smith just challenged this play based on the concept that the Packers had 12 men on the field. The refs double-checked, and no, they did not. So not only did the Bears give the Packers free field goal position, they’re apparently not very good at counting, either.
UPDATE AGAIN: The fake punt was long snapper Patrick Mannelly’s idea; Mannelly was trying to draw a 12-men call on the Packers, but didn’t get the punt off in time. Probably not a great idea, Patrick.
