Questions Arise About Charity Money Raised by Former Redskins

↵↵Along with Darrell Green, Art Monk and Charles Mann have long been viewed in the D.C. area as affable players with strong ties to the community. However, some are now asking what has happened to millions of dollars that the pair of former Redskins raised for a non-profit group to build a job training center in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the District. ↵

↵↵In 1999, Mann and Monk announced that they would open a job training center in the Anacostia section of Southeast D.C. The D.C. government gave control of a historic former theater to the Good Samaritan Foundation, the non-profit set up by the former players, then sold the property to the foundation in 2004 for $255,235. For years the property has sat dormant, even though the foundation has held a number of galas and celebrity golf tournaments to raise funds, no noticeable progress was made beyond the initial stages of construction.↵

↵↵Now it’s been revealed that a public charter school has purchased the property for reportedly just short of $3 million from the foundation. A newsletter from the school said it already opened for classes last week with 130 students. All told, the foundation received millions in federal grants and private donations, the center never materialized and the property has been sold off to a considerable profit. One would presume that answers are forthcoming.↵
