The Giants fell short in a thrilling game tonight, losing to the Rockies 4-3. The Rockies are now up 3.5 games up.
After a Sleepy Eight, Giants Awaken in Ninth But Too Little, Too Late
San Francisco might be able to point to the ninth inning of tonight’s game at the end of the season as the reason why they’ll be on the golf course in early October and the Rockies will be playing for bigger things. The Giants had been gift wrapped the game by a Tulowitzki error that would’ve likely started a double play.
But Edgar Renteria popped out weakly to second (no game winning home run off Rafael Betancourt this time), Randy Winn grounded out to second which got a run home and then Nate Schierholtz swung at was very clearly ball four.
Jorge De La Rosa was masterful tonight, only allowing three hits and striking out nine in his eight innings of work. I imagine De La Rosa must’ve been sweating it out as Franklin Morales and Betancourt looked like they were going to put the Giants only 1.5 games back in the Wild Card chase. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. The NL Bay Area team now sits 3.5 back and faces an uphill climb to get back into this despite taking the first two of the series.
Randy Johnson warmed up in the pen but never saw the mound. And I think it would be safe to say that the Rockies are officially pining for Huston Street to get healthy.
