I was a first-hand witness to the utter disaster that was opening day for Jake Delhomme and the Carolina Panthers. Five turnovers, coming off of his ridiculous implosion against the Cardinals in last year’s playoffs, was not the way to make people forget what seemed like an unreasonable offseason contract extension. Don’t worry; Steve Smith is here to comfort his wounded QB.↵

Steve Smith’s Kind Words for Jake Delhomme
↵↵⇥Delhomme: “I apologize, bro.”↵⇥↵⇥Smith: “Hey, I know you feel like crap. I mean, you’re not a very handsome guy anyway, so. But, the performer, the quarterback … I never really liked you as a quarterback. But as a person, that’s who I love. I love you as a person.”↵⇥
↵⇥↵⇥Delhomme: “I appreciate it. [Inaudible] I just didn’t get enough on that damn ball. I knew where I was throwing it, I just threw it too high.”↵⇥
↵↵OK, judging from Delhomme’s reaction, he’s either the dullest knife in the drawer and he’s oblivious to criticism ... or there’s the more obvious answer that Smith is just kidding. I mean really, what else can you do when you have a game like that in Week 1? If he was going to rip into him, the season would be over. Smith and Delhomme have always worked pretty well together, so to blow that up would make the Panthers into ... well, I guess they’d just start doing direct snaps to DeAngelo Williams every play and running the option with him and Jonathan Stewart. Then again, if Delhomme coughs up the ball five times again this week, maybe that’s not such a bad idea.↵↵(H/T to SB Nation and Sports Crackle Pop)↵
