Holes in Ones and Holes in Cars: Amateur Golf Gets Interesting

There aren’t any mammoth stories in the golfing world at the moment, but a handful of offbeat ones have been so kind as to bubble up to the surface at once. And that’s one of the great things to celebrate about amateur events - the odd accomplishments and evolutions of a game that’s played at a wider range of ages than any other. ↵↵To recap: In the past week, “a Canadian golfer sank three holes-in-one within the span of a few days at one of the country’s most famous public courses. Meanwhile, a 64-year-old Scottish woman nailed two holes-in-one in a single round, something, fellow Scots are quick to note, Tiger Woods has never done.↵

↵↵So a few experienced duffers stumbled upon a few freakishly good rounds? Is that all? ↵

↵

↵↵

↵↵Not quite. While the Canucks and the Scots show their aptitude on the links, the French are content doing their contrarian French thing. Remember, they’re all about deconstruction and destroying your fusty societal norms. The French don’t like to play within the tight parameters you’ve set for your mundane activities. Where you see 18 holes and fairways, they see cells and bars. The structures of the conventional golf course are too confining for their ever imaginative minds. So they must search for golfing challenges elsewhere.↵

↵↵And much like parkour, they’re taking it to the streets, using improvisation and naturally occurring obstacles to make impromptu courses. Sure, they may strike a passerby and shatter a car window or two, but it’s something unique.↵
