Do Not Doubt The Power Of The Mustache, College Football

Landry Jones’s Kip↵Dynamite ‘stache is becoming something of a cause célèbre in two↵places: Oklahoma and the internet, where mustaches are always popular.↵There’s this ... thing, which may be the most bizarre item in the history↵of newspapers slapping together video content:
↵
↵

↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵

↵↵All you need is the first fifteen seconds. And then there’s, um, everyone↵guard Brian Simmons knows: ↵

↵↵⇥“After the first game, people were calling and texting me from↵⇥back home in North Carolina saying, ‘What’s up with your QB’s mustache?’↵⇥” said guard Brian Simmons. “People in my class, tutors in study↵⇥hall, everyone has been asking me about it.”↵↵↵There is a no-foolies “American Mustache Institute” that↵claims to be 44 years old, which has to be crap. I’ve seen Mad↵Men, and there’s no way that a self-parodic irony organization got↵its start in 1965. In any case, they’re extremely enthused and helpful↵about the whole thing, succesfully IDing the particular style as a↵“chevron” mustache and offering up preposterous quotes:↵

↵↵⇥“He is a shining beacon of freedom for all the young people out↵⇥there who wear mustaches.”↵↵↵All joking aside -- I’m super serious -- Oklahoma would do well to embrace↵the ‘stache. ↵

↵

↵This summer an intrepid band of Michigan fans started a↵nationwide movement for Michigan fans to sport↵them at the Western Michigan game, which ended in tremendous↵victory. The next week a guy with a beard↵and no mustache met the 'staches and lost. Meanwhile, Ohio State↵blogs are noting their program's recent (slight) downward trajectory and↵pointing↵out one obvious cause: ↵

↵

↵⇥What's missing [from the Landry article]? Any reference to a Buckeye↵⇥or The Ohio State University, long established as the sentinel for↵⇥glorious college football mustaches. How can discussion of college↵⇥football mustaches not center around the school responsible for the Buckstache?↵⇥Well, it turns out that the current football program has no quality↵⇥candidates here, and that reflects directly on Tressel. Does↵⇥Tressel pay no heed to the legacies of Brian↵⇥Baschnagel, Chris↵⇥Spielman, Marlon↵⇥Kerner (and countless others)? I had hopes for Donnie Evege,↵⇥but it appears that Tressel↵⇥has discouraged him (see: here↵⇥also) from cultivating what was previously↵⇥a burgeoning mustache.↵

↵↵Our Honor Defend says this is a real cause to fire Tressel.↵Seriously. They are super-serious. We have two vectors here, one↵pointing up with the power of the mustache and one pointing down without↵it. It’s clear that Oklahoma’s real problem against BYU was not enough↵glorious Landry ‘stache.↵
