Well, Kirk Cousins is going to have a long bus ride back to East Lansing. For one, he’s going to East Lansing, Michigan, so a certain amount of self-loathing is implied. But worse, he missed a wide, WIDE open Larry Caper in the endzone for a touchdown that would have given the Spartans a lead with under a minute to go.
Defeat from the Jaws of Victory: Notre Dame 33-Michigan State 30
Compounding matters, he followed that gaffe with a much bigger mistake: with Michigan State within range for a tying field goal, Cousins floated a pass across the middle that was promptly intercepted by Notre Dame safety Kyle McCarthy. Game over.
Jimmy Clausen kneeled from there, and the Irish, after living dangerously over the final quarter, escaped with a win. The Spartans loss was not without bright spots. Cousins, for one, looked great for almost the entire game. So while he and the rest of the Spartans will have a long bus ride to dwell on this defeat and the missed opportunities down the stretch, they displayed impressive potential today, and all is not lost for the rest of the season.
