The Colorado Rockies hold the NL wild card lead entering Saturday, but the Giants are slowly creeping closer. They're now only 2.5 games behind and are now Colorado's main threat.
At 4 PM on Saturday, the Giants play the second contest of a three-game series in Chavez Ravine. The Dodgers are enjoying a five-game lead over the Rockies in the NL West, and the Giants trail by 7.5 games in the division, so San Francisco's primary focus is to gain ground in the wild card race.
Unfortunately for Brad Penny (who starts today against the Dodgers' Jon Garland) and the Giants, the team is only 32-41 on the road this season.
Dodgers Host Giants, Who Hope to Close in on Wild Card Race
McCovey Chronicles loves the Giants’ pitching staff, but emphasizes the need to reach the playoffs this year:
If the Giants do squander this fantastical pitching staff -- if they don't make the playoffs -- the real shame isn't that they wasted the Lincecum/Cain/Good Zito/Sanchez/Found Penny pentumvirate. That'd be a drag, but they're all back next year. Well, except for Penny. And Good Zito's going on sabbatical. Also, Cain's getting traded for Prince Fielder. Other than that, the rotation should be the same.
